A Short History
of

Providence Mennonite Church

In 1897, a group of Midwestern Amish and Mennonite families moved into the Denbigh area to found the Mennonite Colony.

In 1900, the Providence congregation was founded as the Amish Mennonite Denomination of Oyster Point, Virginia.  Founding members were David Z. Yoder, J. Z. Mast, C. K. Miller and D.S. Yoder.

In 1975, the original sanctuary was restored and in 1998, the church was recognized as a historic landmark by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

On October 7 & 8, 2000, a Centennial Celebration was attended by more than 200 persons, including a great-grandson of founding member, David Zook Yoder. Some other guests traveled from as far away as Indiana and Iowa.

Providence Mennonite Church is affiliated with the Warwick District of Virginia Mennonite Conference.
